Inside East London’s FLINTA-Led Immersive Gathering: Meet Soma People

Something quietly powerful is unfolding in Hackney. In a part of London alive with queer club nights (and rightly so), Soma People is carving out something distinctly its own.

Founded by queer Iranian women – DJ V.40 and Neda Raschi, and led by FLINTA artists, Soma People is a collective creating immersive gatherings rooted in care, culture and political defiance. Their mission is to make space for FLINTA and queer communities to gather, feel safe, and exist fully – in joy, in softness, in resistance.

For Soma’s founders, nightlife has never been just about dancing. Raised in Iran, where queerness is criminalised and even public dancing is forbidden, creating these kinds of spaces in London is nothing short of radical. Gatherings where chosen family is prioritised, vulnerability is welcome, and where pleasure and safety aren’t in conflict.

Sound is central to Soma People. Their musical roots run deep – from the sweat-drenched walls of Berlin’s Berghain and Tresor to London’s intimate underground scenes. Soma’s curation leans towards what they call “intelligent techno” – music that tells a story and captivates. Their name nods to Brave New World’s “soma,” the fictional drug used to escape reality.

After two well-received London events and one in Berlin, Soma’s community is growing. Their next event, The Circle Forms, lands on Sunday 13th July, 15:00 to late at NT’s Loft, one of Hackney’s most iconic rooftop venues. It’s an all-day, high summer gathering for FLINTA, queer and allied guests – featuring a full FLINTA DJ and artist line-up, a sensory-led space, and a strict no photo/video policy. Tickets here.

We’re looking forward to watching their journey. Until then, we’ll see you in the circle.
