Feeling that nip in the air? Has the rain made a dramatic comeback? Yeah, summer’s done its disappearing act – (until the heatwave next week). We’ve lined up some pretty great sober things to do in Manchester this autumn – because cosy vibes and good times don’t have to come with a hangover. Plus, we’re including a couple of extras for the scary fall vibes that some of us still love, even after Halloween. Whether you’re in the mood to be scared or in the mood to be cosy, we’ve got you covered. Read on!!
Hit up the Trafford Centre
The Trafford Centre can seem large, but what about that bridge to get to Zara? Long. Like, unnecessarily long. But hey, the architecture’s doing the most, and we respect her for it. With autumn settling in and the gift-buying chaos still a few weeks off, now’s actually a pretty ideal time to swing by. Fewer crowds, chilly vibes, and a decent excuse for a day out with mates or family.
And if you’re really leaning into the cold? Hit up Chill Factore – aka the UK’s longest indoor real snow slope. Ski, snowboard, pretend you’re in the Alps. Why not.
Manchester’s Museums
Manchester’s museums? Always a solid shout – quirky, varied, and honestly a great excuse to kill a few hours. There’s bound to be something that grabs you.
And if you’re leaning into that dark academia mood this autumn (aren’t we all?), John Rylands Library is the spot. Total neo-Gothic drama, eerie lighting, the whole vibe. It’s basically begging for a moody Instagram post and a flat white. It’s beautiful and really serves those dark academic vibes, and the neo-Gothic architecture is perfect for Autumn.

Afflecks
We must’ve mentioned Afflecks so many times by now, but it’s very cool, so we’re allowed to. And if you haven’t heard us mention it, well, it’s an independent shopping emporium, riddled with quirky, fun and queer things.
We’d recommend popping in and adventuring around in there. We’re pretty sure you’ll find something in there that you’ll love.
Check Out the Theatres
Nothing like a good musical, right? And no shade to London, but Manchester pulls its weight on the theatre front too. One of our favourites is Palace Theatre & Opera House. Might be worth seeing what’s on tour this autumn – you never know, it could be your last chance to catch it here (too dramatic? maybe). Bit of a splurge, sure, but honestly? Worth it. Go support the arts and all that.
Bookshop Crawl
Autumn is the time for curling up with a book, in your bed, with your fluffy socks on, right? Try a bookshop crawl. Whatever your vibe, Manchester’s probably got a book to offer you. Including Queer Lit which you can read all about what it offers in our article. Plus, doing a bookshop crawl is a great way to make sure you’re still getting out and about this season, despite the cold, dreary, grey, rainy weather. (too much? Sorry!)
Seasonal Suggestions
Alright, time to lean into the spookier side of the season – because yep, Halloween is creeping up fast. The weather’s moody, the nights are longer, and it’s basically the perfect excuse to scare yourself a little (or a lot). We’ve pulled together a few ways to stay entertained, slightly terrified, and still somehow cosy.
Oh, and if some of these look familiar, it’s because they popped up in our London roundup too – go give it a scroll if you’re feeling curious.

Watch a Scary Movie
Nothing beats a good scary movie – whether you’re already in Halloween mode or just love a solid jump scare. That said, there are some great films landing soon, scary or not, if you’re just after a cosy cinema night and some popcorn. No judgment either way.
Christmas Markets
Whilst we might not be quite there yet, but just a gentle reminder that our favourite Manchester Christmas Markets are coming up? Absolutely gorgeous, perfect for Winter and always bound to find something you fancy the look or taste of (we’re talking about food and trinkets – don’t get flirty just because it’s cuffing season.) Fancy reading more? Take a look at the Manchester Christmas Markets
Meal in with Mates
Everyone loves a night in – less effort than dragging yourself to a restaurant (unless your mate lives miles away), and way more room for a theme. Movie night with matching snacks? Classic. Murder mystery dinner with costumes and creepy canapés? Obsessed. (And yes, if you do this, please send pics.)
The vibe is simple: gather your people, get in one house, and make it spooky. Bonus idea? Blanket forts. We don’t care if you’re pushing 30 – build the fort. Live the dream.
Alright, that’s us done. If you’re still in the mood to scroll, we’ve got more winter bits over on the site – there’s even one all about hats (because yes, your head deserves nice things too).
Love,
Nonchalant x
