The Day Thing
Over the Rainbow cafe
Adjacent to the Shambles Market, Over The Rainbow cafe is the perfect spot to meet and go over first introductions, with a toastie or pride-flag-cake between you to break the ice. Situated over a bookshop in one of York’s many historical buildings, Over The Rainbow is a queer space full of vibrant art, comfy blankets, and, importantly, free WiFi. You could go browsing for books afterwards, and see what genres and tropes you both love.
The Afternoon Thing
City Walls

York’s famous Roman walls offer a gorgeous view of the city, and wind almost all the way around. You can go the full distance, or just until Gillygate – there are steps up and down along the route, so there’s no risk of long, awkward silences as you wish you’d brought snacks. The walls also offer plenty of conversation topics, with plaques at intervals explaining the historical significance of different areas, and some good spots for people watching, too.

If It Goes Well
Spark
Spark is an unusual destination in the evening, a quirky food court built of shipping containers and bright, colourful graffiti art. When it gets dark, the fairy lights will provide a low, romantic lighting, and the choice of food (and drink!) is wide-ranging enough to accommodate anybody’s desires or dietary needs. After walking along the walls all afternoon, you’re going to need a good meal.
Wrap Up/Bonus
The Cat’s Whiskers
What’s better to break the ice than cats? Provided you both like them, and nobody has any allergies, of course. York’s cat cafe is host to lots of adorable little friends who can help to keep the conversation going, or get it started (or finish your food for you). Try not to adopt any before the third date mark, but the good news is that it is an option!
