There was a time, not so long ago, when finding a queer bookshop in Britain meant one shop in London and a long train home. Not any more. Over the last few years a whole constellation of LGBTQ+ bookshops has popped up from Aberystwyth to Darlington, each one part reading room, part community centre, part safe haven with genuinely excellent taste in badges.
After the latest sapphic romance? A stack of radical zines? A corner of the world where nobody blinks at what you are holding? Here are 16 queer bookshops worth a visit, a follow and your next payday order.
1. Gay’s the Word – London
The one that started it all. Gay’s the Word opened in King’s Cross in 1979 and has been the beating heart of the capital’s queer life ever since, surviving a customs raid in the 1980s and outliving nearly all of its peers. If you have seen Pride, you have seen the back room. Still essential, always will be.
2. The Common Press – London
Over in Bethnal Green, The Common Press is a bookshop, café and event space rolled into one, part of the wider Glass House venue that also runs a queer bar. Classic case of popping in for one title and leaving three hours later having somehow made friends. Plus they have just opened a new spot in Shoreditch.
3. Queer Lit – Manchester
Founded in 2021 and growing fast, Queer Lit now bills itself as home to the largest selection of LGBTQ+ titles in Europe, several thousand queer books under one roof. Ambitious, beautifully stocked and worth the trip north on its own.

4. Gay Pride Shop – Manchester
One of Manchester’s longer-running queer retailers, going since 2014, pairing its books with all the pride merch you could want. A reliable stop if you are already doing the rounds of the Village.
5. Lighthouse – Edinburgh
Queer-owned and women-led, Lighthouse calls itself an unapologetically activist, intersectional, feminist, anti-racist and LGBTQ+ community space, and it means every word. Radical books, big heart, one of Edinburgh’s most loved indies since 2017.
6. Lavender Menace – Edinburgh
A proper piece of living history. Lavender Menace first opened in 1982 as one of Scotland’s pioneering gay bookshops, and it lives on now as a queer books archive and pop-up, keeping decades of LGBTQ+ publishing alive. Follow along and catch it when it surfaces.
7. Category Is Books – Glasgow
Opened in Govanhill in 2018 with a little help from Gay’s the Word, Category Is Books stocks new and second-hand queer titles, magazines, graphic novels, zines and, by their own admission, an awful lot of badges. Warm, welcoming, deeply of its community.
8. The Bookish Type – Leeds
An independent queer bookshop on Great George Street doing everything from novels and YA to memoir, poetry and graphic novels. It changed hands in 2025 and is still one of the best queer shops in the north, no notes.
9. The Portal Bookshop – York
Since 2019, The Portal Bookshop has brought science fiction, fantasy and LGBTQIA+ books together under one roof, which tells you exactly who it is for. A joy if you like your queer reading with a side of dragons.
10. Bookwyrm – Durham
Durham’s Bookwyrm turned up in 2022 and locals have not stopped talking about it since, rightly. A lovely fixture for anyone after queer and independent titles in the north east.
11. The Queerish Bookshop – Darlington
Proof the boom is not just a big-city story. The Queerish Bookshop opened in Darlington in 2023 and gave the town its own dedicated LGBTQ+ reading spot. We love to see it.
12. Proud Geek – Birmingham
A Birmingham-founded LGBTQ+ bookshop that mostly trades online, championing queer titles since 2020. Handy for when you would simply rather the books came to you.
13. Shelf Life – Cardiff
One of the Welsh capital’s queer-friendly independents, open since 2019 and firmly part of Cardiff’s growing LGBTQ+ cultural scene.
14. Paned o Gê – Cardiff
With a name that plays on the Welsh for a cuppa, Paned o Gê arrived in 2020 and brings a distinctly Welsh queer flavour to the city’s shelves. Utterly charming.
15. Gayberystwyth Books – Aberystwyth
The name alone deserves a prize. Open since 2023 and flying the flag for queer reading on the west Wales coast.
16. Gay on Wye – Hay-on-Wye
In the town famous for having more bookshops than people, it was only right a queer one joined the party. Gay on Wye opened in 2023 and gave Britain’s book capital its own LGBTQ+ corner. Iconic behaviour.
Wherever you are in the country, there is now a queer bookshop closer than you think. Go in, buy something, say hello. These places survive because we show up.
