There’s a never-ending flood of straight films out there, but let’s be real, who wants those? The good news is that Netflix and Prime Video now have a proper stash of lesbian and sapphic movies – if you know where to look. So we’ve done the scrolling for you.
Films marked worldwide are Netflix or Prime Video originals, so you’ll find them wherever you’re watching. Everything else is marked with where we’ve found it – the UK titles were checked on Netflix UK and Prime Video UK, and there’s a section for US viewers at the end. Alice Wu’s coming-of-age gem follows Ellie Chu, a shy, clever student who earns money writing other people’s essays – until a jock pays her to write love letters to Aster, the girl Ellie is quietly falling for. Funny, tender and one of the best queer teen films Netflix has made.
Nyad (2023)

Annette Bening plays swimmer Diana Nyad, who at 60-something decides to swim from Cuba to Florida, with Jodie Foster as her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll. Two gay women, one ridiculous goal and a friendship that carries the whole film.

Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke team up as two outcasts who agree to take down each other’s enemies. It’s Strangers on a Train for the Gen Z private school set, with a queer lead in Eleanor and a lot of very good outfits.
Fear Street trilogy (2021)
Netflix – worldwide
Three slasher films, one cursed town and a lesbian love story at the heart of it all. Deena and Sam are the couple fighting to break Shadyside’s curse across 1994, 1978 and 1666. Watch them back to back with the lights on.
The Prom (2020)
Netflix – worldwide
An Indiana teen is banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom, so a group of washed-up Broadway stars (Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, no less) decide to help. Camp, big and unashamedly musical.
Elisa & Marcela (2019)
Netflix – worldwide
Isabel Coixet’s black-and-white drama tells the true story of two women in 1900s Spain who married in a church, with one of them disguised as a man. Romantic, brave and beautifully shot.
Ride or Die (2021)
Netflix – worldwide
A Japanese thriller about a woman who kills the abusive husband of the girl she’s loved since school, before the two go on the run. Intense, explicit and not one for a cosy Sunday night.
Time Cut (2024)
Netflix – worldwide
A teenager accidentally travels back to 2003 and tries to stop a serial killer from murdering her older sister. A fun time-travel slasher with a sapphic subplot and plenty of noughties nostalgia.
A Secret Love (2020)
Netflix – worldwide
Bring tissues. This documentary follows Terry Donahue, a former professional baseball player, and Pat Henschel, who kept their relationship secret from their families for decades. A gorgeous, gentle love story.
Blue Jean (2022)
Netflix UK
Newcastle, 1988. Jean is a PE teacher living a double life under Section 28, until a new student turns up who recognises her from the local lesbian bar. Georgia Oakley’s debut is quiet, gripping and painfully close to home.

Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri play two unpopular queer best friends who start a high school fight club to impress the cheerleaders they fancy. Chaotic, filthy and one of the funniest films of the decade.

Disobedience (2017)

Rachel Weisz returns to the Orthodox Jewish community in north London she left behind, and to Rachel McAdams, the woman she never got over. Definitely not a comedy, it’s a film about faith, desire and what it costs to leave. You owe it to yourself to watch it at least once.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Prime Video UK – on Netflix in the US
Rosamund Pike is a ruthless legal guardian who scams elderly people out of their savings, with Eiza González as her girlfriend and partner in crime. Then she picks the wrong victim. A villainous lesbian power couple, finally.
Stone Cold Fox (2025)
Prime Video UK – on Netflix in the US
A retro, 80s-style thriller from Sophie Tabet. Kiernan Shipka plays Fox, a runaway caught up with Goldie (Krysten Ritter), the drug dealer who’s also her controlling girlfriend, as she tries to get out. Kiefer Sutherland co-stars.
First Girl I Loved (2016)

This one is almost too relatable. The step up from having a crush on a straight girl is having a crush on a straight girl who reciprocates, only to realise she is – yep – straight. Cute, indie and hard-hitting at times. If you have a soft spot for high school drama, this is for you.
Jamie and Jessie Are Not Together (2011)
Prime Video UK
It opens to Tegan and Sara, and it’s a musical – two very important points. A rom-com about two out lesbians, with a very relatable song about being in love with the wrong girl. Refreshingly, nobody has to battle for acceptance.

Watching from the US? On top of the Netflix originals above, I Care a Lot and Stone Cold Fox are on Netflix there, and these are worth a look too, based on the latest US listings:
- Pariah (2011) – Dee Rees’s coming-of-age drama about a Black teenager coming out in Brooklyn. Essential viewing.
- Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013) – the Palme d’Or winner about a teenager’s all-consuming romance with an older art student.
- On Swift Horses (2024) – a 1950s drama with Daisy Edgar-Jones as a newlywed drawn into a world of gambling and her own desire.
- It’s Only Life After All (2023) – the documentary about the Indigo Girls. Bring a guitar and a tissue.
- Jennifer’s Body (2009) – the cult horror-comedy that queer women reclaimed years after the critics got it wrong.
